[English below] O Carnaval de 2023 quebrou um jejum de dois anos por conta da pandemia de COVID-19. E também marcou a saudade de personagens emblemáticos do samba, que nos deixaram nos últimos anos.
O Bloco Ô GIA é uma iniciativa do Grupo de Interferência Ambiental (GIA), coletivo de arte fundando nos anos 2000 por então estudantes da Escola de Belas Artes da Universidade Federal da Bahia. O bloco sempre desfila na famosa Mudança do Garcia, onde pequenos blocos populares e de representações políticas e da sociedade civil desfilam pela rua principal do bairro do Garcia, com um forte tom lúdico e político.
O Bloco Ô GIA desfila na contramão da Mudança do Garcia. Vai dialogando com os blocos e abrigando seus músicos debaixo de uma tenda confeccionada pelos integrantes. Tradicionalmente, sempre faz reverência ao mestre sambista Riachão, dedicando músicas do compositor na porta de sua casa. Em 2023, Riachão já havia partido deste plano, mas a homenagem continuou, agora marcada pela saudade e presença da família do mestre sambista.
Tive o prazer de participar com o choro da minha cuíca neste desfile tão caloroso, criativo e informal do Bloco Ô GIA. Deixo aqui alguns registros desse momento de grande beleza e alegria.
The 2023 Carnival broke a two-year fast due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also marked the longing for emblematic samba characters, who have left us in recent years.
The Bloco Ô GIA is an initiative of the Environmental Interference Group (GIA), an art collective founded in the 2000s by students at the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Bahia. The block always parades in the famous Mudança do Garcia, where small popular blocks and political and civil society representations parade through the main street of the Garcia neighborhood, with a strong playful and political tone.
The Bloco Ô GIA parades against Mudança do Garcia. It dialogues with the blocos and shelters its musicians under a tent made by the members. Traditionally, it always bows the samba master Riachão, dedicating the composer’s songs at the door of his house. In 2023, Riachão had already departed from this spiritual plan, but the homage continued, now marked by the nostalgia and presence of the family of the samba master.
I had the pleasure of participating with “the cry” of my cuíca (musical instrument) in this very warm, creative, and informal fashion show by the Bloco Ô GIA Block. I leave here some records of that moment of great beauty and joy.
